Fortezza/Franzensfeste is a village in a valley that never sees the sun. Most work here is done at night or underground. Even in summer it’s winter. A place in the twilight zone, with a long tradition of buildings surviving those who build them: a fortress for the Emperor, a dam for Mussolini, a railway tunnel for the EU. Europe seems far away, a fairytale. Lured by its promises, people come here, fleeing from oppressive fathers and political regimes, work hard and will most likely die in this valley. Work is good, they say. Trains stop, but no one ever leaves. A paradox place.
